Facebook & Twitter design changes: what you need to know

Facebook and Twitter are continually updating their platforms – but they’re doing more than adjusting algorithms. These days, many of the tweaks implemented by both social media giants have more to do with the design of timelines. Here’s what you need to know – and check into:

Facebook

Facebook has made some adjustments to the display of cover banners. In particular, the Like, Follow, and Message buttons have been removed from the cover banner display, and the height of the cover banner itself has been increased to 315 pixels (banners should be 851 x 315 pixels).

As always, Facebook profile pictures are resized to 160 x 160 pixels, but the minimum dimensions are 180 x 180 pixels. And now your company name and category/categories will appear in the cover banner area (to the right of your profile picture), so make sure the area is clean so that text is clearly visible and readable.

Twitter

Twitter has been quite busy lately. Their newly updated dimensions for cover banners are recommended with resizing/stretching in mind – so in order to accomodate viewers with larger resolutions, consider uploading banners that are at least 1500 x 1500 pixels – but go larger if you can (up to 3000 x 3000). And always maximize your DPI to avoid blurring and pixelation.

Twitter’s profile pictures are resized to 200 x 200 pixels, but for optimal viewing you should upload profile pictures that are 400 x 400 pixels.

Twitter design tip: if you use a cover banner, skip the background image and opt instead for a solid color. Or, use a background image, but skip the cover banner.
